From information overload to censorship by countries and self-censorship due to personal risks, journalism is under pressure like never before. Media Viability focuses on addressing these and other challenges, helping media outlets and journalists not only survive but thrive in this fast-changing landscape.
Through this initiative, we aim to build the capacity of media outlets in Pakistan, covering key topics that contribute to the sustainability of journalism. This, in turn, strengthens the sustainability of individual journalists. Our courses, developed by industry experts, feature a mix of video, audio, and text-based interactive content. They are self-paced yet highly engaging, incorporating quizzes, games, and assignments to keep learning interactive.
As we grow, more courses will be added each year, keeping pace with the evolving needs of journalism. After all, Media Viability itself must remain viable to ensure the ongoing support of journalists and media outlets.
Media Viability is a professional e-learning platform built specifically for journalists and media professionals in Pakistan. Launched in 2024 with 16 comprehensive courses, the platform has grown to over 24 courses and has reached journalists across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Tribal Regions, Balochistan, Punjab, and Sindh.
The platform is a joint venture of Tribal News Network (TNN) and Individualland, developed with the collaboration of DW Akademie and the German Federal Government. It was created in response to a simple but urgent reality: Pakistan's journalists and media outlets face rapidly growing pressures, shrinking revenues, rising disinformation, and the need to master new technologies, but lack accessible, locally relevant training to meet these challenges.
To empower the next generation of journalists and media professionals in Pakistan with the editorial skills, digital tools, and business knowledge they need to build viable, independent, and diverse media outlets — in their own language, context, and region.
Our initiative is geared towards media professionals, including journalists, editors, and media managers, as well as media outlets looking to strengthen their sustainability and adapt to the changing world of journalism.
Our courses are built around the most pressing needs of Pakistani media today:
